K. Back in the dorm with your update on how the actual movie was…

Unfortunately, I do not have good news. It was one of the poorer movies I’ve seen all year. The comedy was predictable and dull, and if that is the reason you are going to see a comedy movie (for the comedy), then you probably should not go. From a more technical perspective, it was pretty sloppy. There were quite a few shots, especially action sequences, that felt unfinished and sloppy.

Boo! Hiss! Get Smart was not good!

Bye-bye baggy bag

It’s not easy to write this post, and I’ve put it off for a long time already. I thought me being at home and away from the day-to-day would make things easier. I thought I could take my mind off of the problem. But it didn’t work. It just kept staring at me, waiting for me to make a false move so it could remind me of the good times… and so, it is with great sadness…

… that I must retire my dinosaur-laden messenger bag.

Words cannot describe the services it has performed for me, the conversations it has helped me start, the travels and trials that it has helped me endure and overcome…

For you see, the picture above is from Chicago when the bag made its first out of state trip to Chicago, Il. and then Wyoming and Minnesota to go see Pitchfork Music Festival and Lollapalooza. It carried in precious fluids and snacks so we could enjoy bands all day, every day. It carried the pin I had that said “Green Part-AY” and had a girl ask me if I really believed in the Green Party

It accompanied me to the land of Bratwursts and Hot Air Balloons that is Reno, Nevada, holding my camera when I was too busy emphatically supporting various meat products. It came with me to Washington, D.C. and was by my side as I toured our nation’s capital.

I took it to the Lesbian Music and Comedy festival my freshmen year and it protected me, protected my very way of life, though it didn’t attract me too many girls…

It’s been there for me as a laptop holder, overnight bag, man-purse and pillow.

It wasn’t an easy decision to make. I heard the jeers from the onlookers, the comments that the bag was over-the-hill, had too many holes… WHATEVER MAN. Two years that bag and I have shared together, and I’m not about to forget it.

Here’s to you, baggy bag, and the memories we shared, then, now, and forever more.

Loyalty

Sure, the glory days are behind us. Sure, I don’t live here anymore. Sure, I’ve said some negative things in the past.

But if these NBA Finals have showed me anything, it’s that loyalty matters. That’s why I’m renewing my vows as a fan of the Sacramento Kings, cowbells and all.

For the record, I had become a Lakers fan this year for a couple reasons. One, it’s convenient living in Los Angeles, and two, they’re doing well. Those same two reasons go against the Kings (don’t live there, they did poorly). The only time I remember cheering for the Kings was, ironically, when the Lakers played them…

But I’m tired of being a fair-weather fan with false allegiances. It’s a shallow way to support something, and if you’re only going to cheer for the hot teams, then what’s the point? The same holds true for other sports (I got asked outside a grocery store today if I was an Oakland A’s fan… I said “no”, but I should’ve explained further that it’s nothing personal against the A’s, it’s really the whole freakin’ sport of baseball…)

If you have nothing invested except for cheering for who you think is going to keep on winning, not for a team that might lose more games than they win, then what’s the point? That I even thought of cheering for the Lakers was wrong for a number of reasons… of utmost importance is the rivalry. There’s also the smaller matter of former King Eddie House being on the Celtics and playing his li’l heart out.

It is, admittedly, harder to cheer for them consistently. But I should stand by the Kings and their GM Geoff Petrie and hope they stop making stupid draft picks and stupid trades. Even if they continue it, I vow to still be there, pulling out my hair and clutching my head along the way.

For you, reader, this might mean more coverage on my part of the Kings season (ranting and raving, probably) and a renewed fervor. So, K-Mart, Brad, Ron-Ron, and the rest, I’ve got yo’ back. Rest up this summer, because it’s time to make a run at that 8th-seed in the playoffs!

Kayak

Grawrrr!

I went kayaking today for three hours, a nice jaunt around the upper parts of Folsom Lake… and get this, I didn’t drown/die/get burnt/drown! Not once!

And yes, those are my dad’s sunglasses. Ultra-pppolarized.

My other car is a kayak. lol.

Hello, friendo.

Eez a big rock.

Eez nice water.

Mo’ aitch-2-oh.

Big.

Rapids? Maybe I can go down rapids, but I cannot go up rapids.

Pretty nice day out on the water. Not crowded at all, but today was the official last day of school for the entire area, so I can’t imagine that calmness will linger. Nature’s pretty nice, ya know? Especially after a quarter of school, it’s cool to just … “Float On”.

As it turns out, I still have an irrational fear of being able to see through water to the bottom. The best way I can explain it is to compare it to a fear of heights, except… I know I can’t fall and I know I’m a good swimmer.

I think I’m scared of monsters.

Spray Paint Laptop

Spray Paint Laptop from jeffreezy17 on Vimeo.

At long last, here is the video of Kuan’s laptop being spray-painted! I am glad that it’s done, but I am not as happy with the editing as I normally might have been. Overall, I guess, the editing is not that big of a deal since the video’s purpose is for you to watch it and see the spray paint!

I’m going to miss you, Kuan. We have had a lot of silly times together, and it’ll be a fruitless struggle trying to replace them.

Hope you like!

Sumr

I use this picture in the spirit of freedom and exploration, the same one that I felt on my journey through Washington, D.C. earlier this quarter (they are the Cherry Blossoms from DC, by the way).

It’s summertime, everyone. Maybe you still have a final or two left, or an essay, or have a full-time job, but it is summer. As is the norm for me, I see big chunks of time as new beginnings or as a new chance to improve or change myself. A little self-indulgent, but you’re reading a blog written by me, so what should you really expect by now?

Initially I didn’t know what to expect from this summer, but I have since gotten a better grasp. It has changed shapes several times over this past quarter as I signed up for and quit UniCamp, had a chance and lost it at going to DC for an internship, and had a personal change that affects the second half of my summer pretty dramatically… so I spent some time thinking about what to do. As I see it at this point, this isn’t a summer of resume-building or industry experience or any of that, so most of my growth will be personal, if any, and I have some sort of plan to attack that… and here we go!

Part of the problem I have is spending too much time online not broadening my mind or experiences, and to counteract this was my initial thought to not use my computer during the daylight hours, with the exception of work for resTV, if necessary, and CEC, if dealing with film studios. There’s too much to be done outside, out-of-doors, and I’ll be (for various segments of time) in Los Angeles, Loomis, Alaska and Austin, so there’s plenty I can do.

If it’s a school day I’m sure I’ll be fed up of sitting inside for five hours, so I could run, read, or play guitar (I’m considering a banjo, but I don’t know that I need anymore THINGS). On the off-days I can road trip somewhere, learn how to surf, better learn how to use my camera, or if I’m home in Loomis, I plan on getting sun-burnt from being outside in the 100 degree sun. I have a whole lake to kayak around, hills to hike, trails to navigate, and desire. Plus, I’ll be the housewife of the apartment next year so I need to continue refining my cooking skills.

This is not to say all my problems derive from overcomputatin’ but it just seems like the easy scapegoat at this point, and I am by no means saying I’m not going to use it. I will cease instant messenging and will be removing most of the functionality of the Facebook profile until Fall quarter. I would rather have more in-depth communications, or in-person, and the majority of time I spend online that I find trivial are those two things. Not to lash out at others who enjoy them, but I do need a break.

As of now, the film projects I have to work on are still up there in number (Sole Mates, Kuan’s Spraypaint Project, Action Movie, Cloverfield Knock-Off, and given the open times over summer, it’s possible there could be another three to five, especially animations…). The original goal had been to stockpile footage over this quarter to have projects to work on over the summer when there are less people around. Needless to say, my plan worked a little too well, but I have no complaints. They all look like great projects, all satisfying different creative urges.

I have less desire than normal to enumerate goals, as this post is more about expressing my feelings toward this summer. Overall, I am positive about what’s upcoming. I’ll be taking some steps forward in some areas, and if I can answer some of the questions about myself, firm up some of the blurries, I will come back to Los Angeles in early September charged and excited.

I think what I’m really looking for is whether or not I should get a banjo.

10mph discussion

It’s been a while since YouTube has done this, but they’ve put up another feature-length movie (good quality, too). More specifically, it’s the documentary 10mph and I’d been following its progression since I stumbled upon its website a year or so ago… I mean, it’s a story about a film crew using a segway to zoom across America! Why wouldn’t I be interested?

I know this is not an ideal time to post an hour and a half video like this, but I’m doing it for several reasons. One, I can’t think of any content to post right now. Two, I think it’s important to support endeavors like these ones. Thirdly, it’s a pretty decent film (and the price is just right). Fourthly, I’m interested in this sort of “new-wave film-making”.

As someone who finds it difficult to be too subordinate in the creative process (no mailrooms for me), I’m constantly trying to create films or do projects or things, but it’s hard to get the big money support from studios/networks, so when I see DIY people finding a way to make their film without much money and then trying to figure out ways to make money for another film through the internet or through various mediums, I’m intrigued.

These are things I think about now because I know at one point I will probably need to exploit the web for some serious scrilla, so what do you think? Is getting a dollar for each fan you sign up a good way to go about things, when you have a venue like YouTube? Did you like the documentary? Did it feel like just another “Oh look, America can be quaint if you look past the stereotypes” movie, or did it show a new face that you’d not seen before? (I’m not trying to propose leading questions, just trying to get you to look at both sides)?

I personally don’t think this film would succeed in theatres and that it is much better suited for the internet. Not saying it was made with incapable hands by any means, but it does lack a certain professionalism that I’ve come to expect. Is this a bad thing? Will movies start being made for the internet, just as they started being made for TV?

Sole Mates [first glimpse!]

Ohmigosh! Here are some images extracted from the footage I’ve gathered from the three Sole Mates shoots. The coloring is still not what I expected, but the images are as clear as I’d like, so they give me room to work with in terms of editing.

I thought about putting up more pictures, but it’s a teaser! It should convey some of the emptiness that one can capture in Westwood at 6:45 in the morning on a Saturday, the business and buses of midday Wednesday, and a glimpse at how the scenes will play out, but not give away everything! A girl needs to have secrets!

If you have any requests for other pictures, anecdotes, other footage or any other types of updates you’d like to see as I slowly work through this project over the next few months, please post! As always, I hope you enjoyed!

Interview Debrief

(To explain the picture up above, you must first know it is from the movie Rushmore, and that the main character’s name is Max Fischer. He is who I said I identified most with when asked to identify with any movie character, regardless of gender, race or age.)

Well, after the weeks of waiting for the application that would decide whether or not I got an interview to this “prestigious” film school for the next two years of my life that may or may not (depending on the opinion of who you’re talking to) set up my future career…

I had “the interview” today. Wasn’t bad at all. One of the interviewers was tired from seeing Sex in the City and the other one asked fairly easy questions.

The question that was tricky they prefaced with “Are you a good storyteller?” I bluntly answered “yes”, figuring that this was what they expected. Then they gave me three words-parakeet, rowboat, and the color orange-and told me to come up with a story. This is a very painful endeavor and I don’t recommend it if you can help it.

Other than the generally pleasant interview, I sat in a room with about five film students and a couple other interviewees for a time, about twenty minutes before and about an hour and a half after. They were all really good people and it made me excited about the prospect of helping them out sometime in the future. Also it pays to be nice to them because they tell the interviewers what we’re like in “real life situations”.

I walked out with a guy and we talked for a bit about the reality of film school, and he confirmed that the way I’ve been doing things, the independently seeking out projects and creating your own work on the side is equally beneficial as any networking film school can give you. His projects are far more impressive than the ones I’ve attempted, and he encouraged me to audition for Spring Sing next year. High hopes! The lasting impression he gave me was that if he had to pick between Spring Sing and Film School, there’d be no choice… Spring Sing hands down, in the sense that it has led to him getting almost everything he has and is working on.

Sad news for all of you though, this ends the streak of film school postings. I find out one way or the other in July (gets mailed to my house in Loomis… so mother must open it and telegram me the news), and I don’t plan on dwelling upon this anymore than this post.

Ultimately, I doubt that I am that much different than the rest of the candidates, so I imagine I am on the fine line between acceptance and rejection, which is fine. I had a good time laughing around with the other interviewees and the actual film school students, met someone I’d like to work with in the future, and blocked one of Conor’s shots in basketball today.

Pretty good day.
